Evaluating Singapore Nursing Education for relevance and possible application in the United Kingdom

Dr Jennifer Loke began her academic career in Singapore in 2000, and has been in her present post since 2003. She is a registered general nurse by background and holds a nursing degree from La Trobe University in Australia (1994).

Jennifer’s eight years rich experience in clinical research and practice is based on various sub-specialities including, but not limited to, coronary and critical care nursing. Having an MBA from Leicester University (1999), Jennifer has good academic and institutional-related strategic leadership knowledge and skills, which have resulted in several marks of distinctions in her career. One of these is her PhD study (2005-2009) which has made an original contribution to knowledge in the field of interprofessional learning, based on asynchronous text-based computer-mediated conferencing.

Jennifer’s outstanding commitment in academic work, often based on a global perspective, has enhanced her innovative use of value-added pedagogic methods. Her dedicated achievements have led to invitations from several countries around the world for publications of books and book chapters, delivering conference papers, conducting seminars and external examination work at Master’s and PhD levels. Jennifer is always in pursuit of quality and effective nurse education and has great interest in promoting employability and social mobility of nursing students. Her dedicated commitment and her valuing in the translation of good practice, in a global sense have led to the award of the International Scholarship Scheme. This prestigious award is allowing her to consider how the transferability of good nursing educational practice between the UK and Singapore, can promote the best and highest quality experience for UK student nurses.

In a voluntary capacity, Jennifer is active in initiating and encouraging innovative systems and practices in the community. Not only does she offer research support to nurses locally and internationally, she is also active in providing free management and research consultancy services to a teaching establishment in England. Beyond England, she has initiated an informal online social space for a group of PhD students for peer support through online discussion. She has also established a good networking relationship with the United Medical Centre in Singapore for potential collaborative research.
